The Department has adopted the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requirements found in NIST Handbooks and Publications. To obtain handbooks or publications or to download, click on the handbook you are interested in.
Handbook 44: Specifications, Tolerances, and Other Technical Requirements for Weight and Measure Devices contain information needed to design or test weighing and measuring devices for commercial use. It covers a wide variety of devices such as those used to dispense fuels, scales, odometers and fabric measuring devices.
Handbook 130: Uniform Laws and Regulations in the Area of Legal Metrology and Engine Fuel Quality contains the required procedure for verifying the accuracy of retail pricing, regulations prescribing the method of sale for commodities and packaging and labeling requirements.
Handbook 133: Checking the Net Contents of Packaged Goods contains the required sampling and testing procedures for verifying the accuracy of packaged goods. It also includes regulations prescribing the method of sale.
Handbook 112: Examination procedures for commercial weighing and measuring devices.
The Department has adopted the ASTM Standards for motor fuels and test methods. To obtain the ASTM Standards you can click on the link below.
The Department has adopted California Air Resources, (“CARB”) Standards and test methods. To obtain those standards and test procedures you can click on the links below.
CARB Test Procedures
- The Department has adopted in its rules sections of the Environmental Protection Agency, (“EPA”) regulations 40CFR.
- The Department has also adopted a portion of Title 16 Commercial Practices , Federal Trade Commission. (16 CFR 306).
